Stuart MacGregor commenced his career with Strata Control Technology Group in 1995 as a Geotechnical Engineer, and in 2000 he became a Senior Geotechnical Engineer. He was appointed as a Director of SCT in 2003 and was made Managing Director in 2016.

Stuart has extensive experience in developing, implementing and managing geotechnical programs in technically challenging underground hardrock and coal mining environments in Australia and overseas.

His major area of work is the characterization, design and layout of underground coal mines including:

  • Assessment and optimization of ground support and associated mining practices.
  • Quantified geotechnical characterisation of the underground mining environment from exploration data for brownfields and greenfields development.
  • Stress measurement using borehole breakout analysis.
  • Design assessment for roadway, pillar and extraction layouts using observational, empirical and numerical modeling approaches.
  • Assessment and design of specialist underground structures including drift and shaft development.
  • Field based monitoring and assessment programs including mapping, specialist geotechnical instrumentation and analysis.
  • Design, implementation and review of strata management practices and operating procedures at operational and corporate level.
  • Training of operational and technical personnel in aspects of coal mine geomechanics.

Stuart has undertaken geotechnical consulting work in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, China, USA, India, UK and Turkey.

Stuart was the Technical/Training Specialist (strata control) of the AusAID (Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) Project - India: Directorate General of Mines Safety Training Program. This project commenced in July 1997 and ran for three years. He was responsible for the management and delivery of specialised training services for coal mine geomechanics to officers from the Indian Directorate General of Mines Safety.

Stuart has conducted a range of technology transfer programs in China, including with Yanzhou Mining Group Company (YMGC) and HuaiNan Mining Group.

In 1991 Stuart completed his Bachelor of Geological Engineering at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.

Stuart has previously worked at Telfer Gold Mine – Newcrest Mining (1992-1995) and is a member of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and Engineers Australia.
